Save the planet - Solution: No Children ? Print E-mail

While the majority of parents see children as the ultimate miracle of life there is a view by some people that children are in fact a threat to the future of our planet.

The argument put forward by those who advocate a ‘no children’ position is based on the idea that each additional child uses more of the planets limited resources (food, water, fossil fuels, trees) while at the same time producing additional rubbish, pollution and greenhouse gases.

The contrary argument is that by producing a limited number of children we have a small or negative impact on population growth and ultimately produce citizens that contribute to the tax base of the economy, and thus contribute money which can be channeled into ecologically sustainable projects and technology.

While in the end this is all a matter of opinion and personal choice many of the issues we seek solutions to will require a focus on behaviour and technology change. If we choose to have children the education we provide them on ecological issues will contribute to the long term health of planet earth.

So what are they planning to do anyway? Impose a strict law that no two people can have children? Like THAT'S going to work. And what do they think will happen in the future if we stop having children? Do they think that the enviroment will just fix itself after everyone's dead? We're supposed to be saving the enviroment FOR our children so that future generations can grow up in a beautiful world where we are able to coexist with the world happily. Or am I wrong and we're just going to give a small effort to saving the planet and then kill our children to prevent them from joining our cause when they grow up.

Increasing the population of course does not help matters but I think the point that is sorely neglected and should have been made is this: Raise better global citizens out of those that're born.

Perhaps instead of creating new children, especially because people want "little us's," people should be adopting the children that are in foster homes and orphanages. Sure, they might have their hangups, need extra help but there's at least a good chance that they would not take for granted what so many are born into believing is their God-given right.
Gordon - Population must shrink until   | 219.90.148.xxx | 2008-09-06 07:01:42
Population needs to shrink until the "ecologically sustainable projects and technology" can be made. so far I don't see the technology. My van, my cat, and I use far less consumables than your Prius, your two kids and you. If you have more than Two kids, you should be paying a huge penalty tax.
