Who should be Responsible for Recycling Waste? Print E-mail

Who should pay for the disposal / recycling costs associated with products (eg. computers, cans, glass bottles, cars and whitegoods)? Click here to make comment before voting

Who should pay for the recycling costs of products?

  • ·         Manufacturers - Would this change the way they build/package products that are less harmful to the environment or would they just pass the costs onto consumers?
  • ·         Consumers - If we consumers had to pay for the disposal/recycling costs, would we be more likely to consider the environmental impact individual products have?
  • ·         Governments - The problem of product disposal / recycling impacts society as a whole and therefore becomes a government responsibility?

The consumer should be held responsible for the items he purchases. Maybe we would become more responsible if we had to find ways to dispose of all of the garbage we create by overconsuming.

We can Reduce, Reuse, Refuse to keep on buying more stuff that we do not need. There are many websites and other ways to recycle when we need an item or have one that still has some life.

I think that the company should be help responsible for the products that they make. If we hold the companies responsible, they will find better, more environmentally friendly, ways of making their products.

Recycling needs to be a joint venture between all three. From the manufacturers at production to packaging. The consumer for the disposal fo the packaging and the item this new purchase is replacing. The Goverment to make it easier for consumers to recycle. So many times you hear - I had xyz in great condition I didn't need it anymore and NO-ONE was prepared to take it - even for no cost!! This has to be addressed.

I just tried to find a place to recycle a 4ft fluorescent tube, and it was really difficult. If gov't doesn't require recycling of everything easily, then people will be too inconvenienced and by and large throw "it" away. Companies should also come under increased scrutiny for the products they create, and be responsible for designing products with safeguards that prevent contamination of water and soil. It's everybody's job, and the cracks between responsibilities is where the pollution will seep.
